Paper and Cardboard Waste Management:
—From Waste and Scraps to Briquettes
Compact wood shavings and paper scraps into briquettes: reduce volume and disposal costs
Every company that manages archives, packaging lines, document processes, or productions with packaging generates significant quantities of paper waste. Paper, cardboard, filters, material for destruction: all of this takes up space and costs money to dispose of.
COMAFER’s Dinamic Series briquetting machines compact these materials (which must be shredded beforehand if necessary) into dense cylindrical briquettes, reducing their volume by up to 90%. Fewer containers, fewer unloading operations, lower costs, and the opportunity to recover energy from the material by using it as fuel for boilers.
Do you use a shredder or document destroyer? The briquetting machine is the perfect complement: it transforms already shredded material into compact, easy-to-manage briquettes.
Paper mills and paper industries
Production waste, trimmings, tissue paper (to be shredded beforehand if necessary): large volumes that the briquetting machine compacts continuously while connected to the production lines.
Companies with large archives or offices
Documents to be destroyed and shredded paper: briquetting also provides additional security compared to simple shredding.
Packaging industries
Corrugated cardboard scraps, packaging, and cardboard (to be shredded beforehand if necessary): drastic reduction in volume, resulting in less frequent container pickups.
Food and coffee industry
Coffee pod filters, paper bags, and primary packaging (to be ground beforehand if necessary): waste that is difficult to manage, which the briquetting machine compacts efficiently.
Printing houses and print centers
Trimmings, test prints, scrap paper (to be shredded beforehand if necessary): The briquetting machine reduces the disposal costs for special manufacturing waste.
What paper materials can be briquetted?
COMAFER has successfully tested all major categories of paper materials, provided moisture content is between 8% and 17%:
Paper
Shredded paper, tissue paper, printing paper, office paper, archive paper, destroyed documents
Cardboard
Corrugated cardboard, boxes, cardboard, packaging, industrial packaging
Special materials
Obsolete banknotes, holograms, securities, confidential documents
Filters and composite packaging
Cigarette filters, coffee pod filter waste, multipurpose paper bags
All of these materials may need to be ground beforehand, if necessary
Concrete advantages for paper waste management
Briquetting offers concrete, measurable advantages:
-90% Volume
Light and bulky residues reduce volume by up to 90% after briquetting: fewer containers, fewer trips, lower logistics costs.
+80% Combustion Efficiency
Untreated paper briquettes have higher energy density than loose material. Briquetted paper and cardboard achieve very high calorific values.
-70% Recycling Costs
Briquettes cost less to dispose of and can be sold as renewable fuel.
Sustainability
Energy recovery from paper residues reduces emissions compared to disposal and contributes to the circular economy.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions about briquetting
Do I need to pre-shred the paper and cardboard before briquetting?
For cardboard in sheets or whole boxes, shredding is necessary. Paper already shredded by document destroyers can be briquetted directly.
Can paper briquettes be used as fuel?
Yes, uncoated paper and cardboard have a reasonable calorific value and can be used in biomass boilers. Coated paper, paper with special inks, or composite materials require emissions verification. For combustion, it is always advisable to verify compliance with local regulations (Legislative Decree 152/2006 and local emissions regulations).
Is it possible to briquette banknotes and confidential documents?
Yes. Briquetting already shredded or destroyed material adds an additional level of security. COMAFER has active clients in the banking and institutional sectors for certified destruction of paper securities. Material compacted at high pressure is effectively unrecoverable.
Can the briquetting machine be connected to my paper aspiration system?
Yes. The Dinamic Series briquetting machines can be connected to silos and filter units, both indoors and outdoors. This configuration allows for the automatic collection of paper shavings and dust from the vacuum system to the briquetting machine.
